MIDDLETOWN >> He’s just a freshman, but Solomon Malicay of the Middletown High School tennis team is the real deal.

“I’ve been teaching him since he was 11,” Middletown tennis coach Vic Wroobel said on Monday following the Mustangs’ 4-1 Coastal Mountain Conference victory over the visiting Cloverdale Eagles.

“You tell him to do something and he does it,” Wroobel said. “He hits hard but he does everything well. The kid is really something else.”

Malicay put his many talents on display in first singles where he defeated Cloverdale’s Lucas Pope 6-1, 6-4.

All four of Middletown’s wins, including a sweep of singles, came in the minimum two sets. Robert Amante prevailed 6-0, 6-4 over Everett Conway in second singles, and Johnny Nance beat Paige Wasnicka 6-1, 6-2 in third singles.

In first doubles, Trevor Smith and Christian Nikolov were 6-4, 6-0 winners over Jordan Persons and Derick Rilea.

Middletown does not have a second doubles team and had to forfeit.

The Mustangs play two more matches this week, both on the road. They travel to Kelseyville on Thursday and to Lakeport on Friday to face Clear Lake.
