LAKEPORT >> Rachel Wingler limited Kelseyville to four hits and worked out of a couple of minor jams while pitching the Clear Lake Cardinals to a 8-0 North Central League I softball win over the visiting Knights on Tuesday afternoon.
Wingler struck out 11 and walked just one as the Cardinals improved to 2-0 in the league standings and 7-3 overall. Kelseyville did put runners into scoring position in a handful of innings but Wingler was up to the task each time. In the top of the second, she struck out a Knights batter to strand runners at second and third.
“Rachel pitched well and our defense played well today,” Clear Lake coach Doug Wingler said.
Clear Lake scored its first two runs in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals went on to add two in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth against losing pitcher Morgan Profitt, who allowed eight hits, struck out two and walked six.
“They (Knights) played good defense,” Wingler said. “We had a couple of opportunities to break the game open but their outfielders made some great catches.”
“We did make some nice plays in the outfield,” Kelseyville coach Jeff Bour added. “But we’ve got to hit the ball if we’re going to compete with these teams.”
Wingler also led the Cardinals at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Emily Psalmonds also doubled.
Bailey Couey, Bib Hamner, Tymeka Green and Kailani Brown (double) had the Knights’ hits.
Kelseyville is 0-2 in league and 3-2 overall.
