ALBANY >> Eighth-grader Mavis Pyorre of Terrace Middle School in Lakeport just missed out on a medal Saturday during the California Girls Middle School State Wrestling Championships in Albany, placing seventh in the 99-pound weight class.

Medals were awarded to the top six in each weight division.

Seeded third in her weight class, Pyorre opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory before losing a hard-fought 4-0 decision to the eventual 99-pound champion, Yasmine Scherer of Bakersfield. It was Scherer’s only close match of the tournament as she went on to beat No. 1 seed Avril Deleon of Castro Valley 8-2 in the finals. Scherer’s other wins were by pin.

Pyorre bounced back with a win by pin in her next match before dropping a back-and-forth 7-5 decision to No. 2 seed Melissa Posas, who went on to place fourth. Pyorre nearly pinned Posas in the second round. That loss knocked Pyorre out of medal contention.

“She did great, I’m so proud of her, there is no quit in this girl,” Terrace School coach Rick Pyorre said of his daughter’s tournament run.

Up next for Pyorre is the United States Girls Wrestling Association National Championships on April 16 in American Canyon.
