COBB >> Matt Wotherspoon has had a pretty good last couple of days.

The Kelseyville High School sophomore won the championship flight in the 21st annual Lake County Match Play Championship on Sunday at Buckingham Golf and Country Club (see related story above), becoming only the third junior golfer to win the championship flight in a Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit event during the circuit’s 23-year history, and on Wednesday he carded an even-par 68 with five birdies, the low individual round during a Coastal Mountain Conference South match at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain.

Wotherspoon’s round on Wednesday didn’t exactly start as planned. He bogeyed each of the first holes but had nothing but pars and birdies the rest of the way.

St. Vincent’s Alex Graham and St. Helena’s Ryan Johnson were two shots behind Wotherspoon with 2-over-par rounds of 70. St. Helena’s Connor Chesky finished with 72 and Geyserville’s Carson Kalvfelisch had 74.

On a hot spring day and at altitude, the ball was flying on the Cobb Mountain course, according to Kelseyville coach John Berry, who had his hands full as he helped marshal both CMC South and North golfers around the Adams Springs course – a total of nine teams (Technology, a CMC South member, did not show up).

Things couldn’t have run much smoother, according to Berry, who mixed up the pairings between North and South golfers.

“The kids got to play with some new faces and there were no issues,” Berry said. “It was a nice, feel-good kind of day.”

Adams Springs also provided a meal for the golfers.

St. Vincent won the South match with a score of 320 (combined total of the four low individual scores) to remain undefeated in the conference standings at 24-0. On the North side, Willits finished with 406 and is 8-0 on the season.

Among the South golfers, Derek Coulter led Middletown with a round of 84, dropping 21 shots off his total from last week’s match at Foxtail South in Rohnert Park.

“He has been taking lessons,” Berry said.

Coulter’s teammate, Hayden Sust, finished with a round of 89.

Also shooting in the 80s was Rincon Valley Christian’s low man, Jacob Hobson, who carded an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole and ended up with 85.

“He holed out on a wedge shot from 40 yards,” Berry said.

Among North golfers, the low round went to Anthony Sorace and Price Runberg of Willits with 96. Mike Camacho led Clear Lake with 100.

South and North golfers return to action next week. For the South, it’s a trip to Meadwood in St. Helena on Wednesday. For the North, the next stop is Brooktrails in Willits a week from today.
