UPPER LAKE >> Julia Mooney’s solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning provided all the offense she needed to beat the Geyserville Broncos in a non-league softball game on Friday afternoon in Upper Lake.
The sophomore pitcher had the game, which the Cougars went on to win 10-0 in five innings, well in hand by then thanks to all kinds of offensive support from her teammates, including a 2-for-3 day with two RBIs by Rebecca Harper, a 3-for-4 day by her catcher Cheyanne Obedoza, and two RBIs apiece from Jazlyn Bonilla and Katlyn Minnis.
“The girls played awesome,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said.
Apart from banging out 12 hits, Coburn said the thing she was most pleased about was the play of her defense, which didn’t commit an error against Geyserville.
“They didn’t rush their throws, they played relaxed,” Coburn said. “We’re improving every game and I can’t ask for anything more.”
Mooney’s pitching completed a solid outing for the Cougars (3-4). She allowed just two hits, struck out six and walked only two.
Upper Lake scored three times in the bottom of the second, added four more runs in the third, and capped it off with a three-run fourth.
The Cougars wrap up the non-league portion of their schedule with a home doubleheader Tuesday against Ferndale beginning at 2 p.m.
