Kelseyville >> Kelseyville Senior Center sits in the middle of a large group of seniors that will soon be able to benefit from nutritious meals in the dining hall Monday through Friday beginning May 2.
Senior centers play a vital role in the communities they serve, said Lakeport senior center director Jonathan Crooks.
Research shows that older adults who participate in senior center programs can learn to manage and delay the onset of chronic disease and experience measurable improvements in their physical, social, spiritual, emotional, mental and economic well-being. Compared with their peers, senior center participants have higher levels of health, social interaction, and life satisfaction (ncoa.org).
Soup and salad bar open at 11:30 a.m. and main course at noon. Seniors older than 60 eat free with a suggested donation of $5, with non-seniors the fee is $6. Using the meals as a centerpiece for socialization more programs will be expanded and offered to the local area.
The center has volunteers to help serve food and connect the seniors to other resources through its information and assistance program. The center hosts art classes, card games and starting the same week as the meals will be Zumba Gold exercise classes Wednesdays and Fridays. New volunteers and ideas for activities are always welcome. The goal is to breathe new life into the senior center for the seniors and be the much needed resource to the aging community in Kelseyville.
This move has been made possible through the support and direction of the Lakeport Senior Activity Center and staff. For decades Lakeport has been delivering hot nutritious meals to the homebound seniors of Kelseyville and will now offer the same menu and dining opportunity through the senior center, Crooks said.
“The Lakeport center has been known the last few years as having the best salad bar in town along with its delicious soups and varied entrees,” he said.
The same menu will be available in Kelseyville each weekday. Everyone is invited to the grand opening of the Kelseyville lunch program May 2 at 11:30 a.m.
