Soroptimist International of Clear Lake presented a $500 donation to Shirley Crawford, co-founder of Sponsoring Survivorship, a program that helps women with cancer.

Crawford was all smiles when honored with the contribution at the Club’s monthly business meeting last week. “We established Sponsoring Survivorship 20 years ago to help local women cover the costs associated with their struggle against breast cancer,” she said. “Thank you, my friends, for your long standing support.”

Club treasurer Kelley Slater reported that the club raised $8,000 at the recent annual fund-raiser, the Spring Fling. “This allows us to continue to support Sponsoring Survivorship and other programs that benefit women and girls,” she said.

“According to the Center for Disease Control, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women of all races in the United States,” said President Olga Martin Steele. “We are pleased to support Lake County women battling cancer through programs like Sponsoring Survivorship and very proud of members Brenda Crandall, Fawn Williams and Kelley Slater, who participate in the annual AVON walk to end cancer.”

The club also provides free mammograms for those who cannot afford to get the test that screens for breast cancer.

Other key Soroptimist programs that benefit local women include the “Live Your Dreams” program that awards educational cash grants to women who are the primary wage earners in their families and the “Ruby” award program that recognizes women who make a significant contribution to their community.
