Glenn Mueller, the instructor of the Construction Fundamentals and Green Building course at Mendocino College Lake Center Campus, along with his students, presented a portable dog kennel to Karen Schaver of Orphan Dog at the Lake Center Campus in Lakeport Thursday evening. The class spent the last few months building the kennel, which is purposely “overbuilt” in order to teach students the basic fundamentals required to build a house. The students didn’t have any plans, but designed the kennel together in class. And since the class focuses on environmentally friendly construction, they used 100 percent of their eco-friendly materials. In honor of Hanna Scully, Miss Lake County Outstanding Teen, who donated funds to Orphan Dog, a plaque engraved with “Hanna Scully Suite” was presented to Scully and affixed to the side of the kennel. The Lake Center Campus will be offering Construction Fundamentals and Green Building again this fall. – Jennifer Gruenke — Lake County Publishing
