LAKEPORT >> Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Lakeport’s Library Park on Sunday, May 1.

The holiday is named for the fifth of May, but does not — as many Americans believe — commemorate Mexican independence. Instead, it honors the Mexican army’s unexpected victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, part of a long war against the French.

The celebration on Sunday begins with a blessing at 9:30 a.m., followed by music, food and other fun. The festivities begin at 11 a.m.

Performers include the Kelseyville Singers, Imra Lopez, Groupo XMG, El Torito de Petate and a gymnastics demonstration. There will be informational booths for several organizations in the park, as well.

No tobacco or alcohol permitted.

The Cinco de Mayo celebration is sponsored by Bruno’s Shop Smart. For more information call 279-4152.
