WINDSOR >> St. Helena’s Connor Chesky didn’t let a little thing like a three-club wind spoil his day as he fired a 1-under-par 71 to top the field Wednesday during a Coastal Mountain Conference South golf match at Windsor Golf Club.

Chesky played the front nine at 3-over-par 39 but came roaring back with a 4-under-par 32 on the back nine, including four birdies.

South champion St. Vincent led in team scoring with 326 (combined low four rounds) to St. Helena’s 366 and Middletown’s 382. Kelseyville, Geyserville, Rincon Valley and Technology all had incomplete squads (fewer than four golfers).

Wednesday’s round was the first half of the CMC South Championship, which helps determine at-large berths for the upcoming playoffs. While St. Vincent’s team automatically advances to the postseason for winning the South, three conference golfers who are not members of the St. Vincent team also move on. Combined scores at Windsor and Oakmont West next Wednesday will determine who those three golfers are. Chesky, Kelseyville’s Matt Wotherspoon and St. Helena’s Ryan Johnson hold the top three slots after their play at Windsor followed by Middletown’s Derek Coulter and Geyserville’s Carson Kalvfelisch.

Wotherspoon carded a 78 with three birdies on Wednesday while Johnson was a shot back at 79. Both Coulter and Kalvfelish finished with 82.

“It was a beautiful day and the course was in great shape, but the wind was a real factor,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “If you hit the ball high, you were in trouble.”
