Both sides

In response to Gene Paleno’s column 5/31- “If any of us are to be remembered it will be for what we do for others”. Yes, and the opposite is also true!

Rosenthal for District 1

We are writing to voice our support for Monica Rosenthal for District 1 Supervisor.

After careful consideration of the strong field of candidates this year, we feel that Monica’s focus on economy, jobs, and business development is what our county needs right now. Monica is a good communicator, a caring community member, and she works efficiently and responsibly.

Let’s elect Monica for Supervisor.

Liberalism

A guy in Montana goes to the state and applies for a permit to build a stock pond off a livestock irrigation ditch and gets a legal permit. The key to this is it is a livestock irrigation ditch, not a stream.

In steps the EPA and says you have obstructed a navigational water supply which is 150 miles away and the irrigation ditch has to run uphill to reach this navigable water way. They impose a $37k per day fine until the stock pond is abated. This is a local rancher with a wife, 4 kids, on a 9 acre ranch. Fortunately Pacific Legal Foundation steps in and wins the case but not before years pass and the fines accrue to $14 million, and no explanation from the EPA about why.

The Government runs amuck, you bet! And you are paying for it because their lawyer bills had to run into millions of dollars of taxpayer money. They would have been happy to foreclose on this man’s property, all for the almighty dollar, not Justice (Just Us) and this is the policy of the Liberal Obama administration. Again Dems are always right.

Then to top it off, this administration has been writing 80k pages of these kind of rules for the last 3 years, more than any admin ever. Liberalism run amuck!

Liberalism is the bane of the world, just look at Europe or our six largest crime ridden cities run by Liberals for decades. It is also rumored that Loretta Lynch is trying to stack the Justice Department as to prevent a conservative president from undoing these draconian rules. This admin is depressing economic growth to 2 percent a year with these rules which amounts to no growth because that will not support new workers coming into the work force.

The new work rules are so draconian that it takes a lawyer to interpret them then try to out do the Justice Departments interpretation of the rules! They do this so you will just pay the fine just like the poor guy in Montana. Over 1,000 tornadoes touch down in the U.S. every year reeking havoc. Just like this Liberal Dem admin is doing today. A path of destruction of small business and middle America who have seen their annual income decrease by more than 5k per year.

While every day living expenses have increased substantially, and yet this admin tells us everything is fine? Lie after lie and everybody mocks me about lies. You have to be brain dead not to call a lie a lie. Oh that’s right, it’s not Islamic Extremism, IT’S DEM PC RUN AMUCK.

Great

I feel the slogan I hear (too much): “Let’s make America great again!” is demeaning to my country. What I think it says to the world is that America is not great, and I don’t think that is so. Certainly not if you compare the United States to the rest of the world’s countries over the last century. Over that period I feel the world is far better off for our contributions than it would be without.

Certainly America has lost a great deal of respect by having the conviction that we, alone, knew what was best for parts of the world, certainly in terms of history, cultures, and religion. The results, certainly in the middle east, are not (and have not been) pleasant. Sometimes being “righteous” causes bad things.

Do I want a “great America”, and do I think I have one, of course! But I do worry that some people’s wishes that America “throw its weight around” for self interest really is not “in our ultimate interest”. The world already has one Putin/Russia!

Thanks

Members of the Clear Lake Trowel & Trellis Garden Club would like to thank everyone who assisted in the success of our 2016 “Hidden Gardens of Lake County Tour” held Saturday, May 14. Although the day was unseasonably chilly and windy—with some raindrops here and there — it was heartwarming to once again experience the enthusiasm this event holds for attendees.

Funds raised will allow our club, now 61 years old, to continue our role in the community we all love so much, introducing new members to the joys (and successfully addressing the challenges) of gardening, working on our community beautification projects, and sponsoring local youth through farm-to-table school gardening programs and garden-related college scholarships.

First and foremost we want to thank the homeowners and businesses who opened their gardens to us; without which, of course, there would be no tour. We thank Win and Sue Stiles, Jim and Patti Offenbach, Helen Finch, Chacewater Winery and Olive Mill and Boatique Winery for the time, money, and physical effort you put into making your venues so fabulous. Anyone who lives here and has not seen the world class facilities at the two wineries is missing something wonderful! Perhaps the comment heard most often by club docents from out-of-town attendees at both the wineries and the homes was an incredulous “THIS is Lake County!?!??” which says it all.

We also thank the accommodating and wonderful businesses who took the time to sell tickets for us. You are the best and we cannot tell you how valuable this was for the success of the tour! Please patronize these wonderful community-minded businesses: Main Street Nursery, Flowers by Jackie, and The Shoe Box in Lakeport, and Bird Brain Designs in Kelseyville-who also offered two hand-embroidered wall hangings for a raffle.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Dripworks.com Sales Representative Chris White, who was on hand to answer “drip” related questions, and who donated a new timer for us to raffle for extra proceeds.

Our local UCCE Master Gardeners are a treasure, incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about local gardening. Thank you to the fantastic Master Gardeners who were posted at each venue to answer the countless “what-plant-is-that-and-how-do-I-keep-it-alive” questions: Heather Peterson, Barbara Haddon, Sherry LeGallais, Bert Agustinovich, Karole Ward, Ruth McConnell, Suzanne Lee and Marva Brandt.

A big thanks to Upper Lake High School FFA student Cyndal Ader and to Lower Lake High School FFA students Piper Carr, Rebecca Laurenson, Emily Nichols and their teacher Ms. Kimberly Olsen for valuable assistance.

Lastly, to the members of our garden club, their families and friends, who contributed time by serving on the committee, raising plants for the plant sale, constructing and placing signs, acting as docents and assisting with parking — we are all truly, “Flower Friends Forever”!!!
