Lakeport >> Lake and Mendocino counties have been awarded funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Lake County has been chosen to receive $38,312, and Mendocino County $40,587 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.
The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by FEMA, of the Department of Homeland Security, and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Salvation Army; United Jewish Communities; and the United Way of America.
The local boards were charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the county.
A local board made up of representatives of the above-mentioned organizations and local service agencies from both counties will determine how the funds awarded to each county are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by service agencies in the area. The board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.
Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funds must contact Traci Boyl, Lake and Mendocino counties EFSP local board chair, North Coast Opportunities, 263-4688 extension 121, tboyl@ncoinc.org to receive an application.
