BUCKINGHAM >> Jerry Pangle of Lakeport, the 2014 Lake County senior golfer of the year, ran away with the 19th annual Lake County Senior Golf Championship on Saturday at Buckingham Golf and Country Club.
Pangle started his round in dynamic fashion, jumped to a five-stroke lead after nine holes of play, and cruised to a four-stroke victory.
Pangle birdied the long par-4 first hole, added back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, and shot an even-par 36 on the opening nine. The 36 gave him a five-stroke lead over Dr. Bob Jolin of Lakeport and Manny Mendoza of Buckingham while leaving him eight shots ahead of Scot Lamanuzzi of Buckingham.
Despite a trio of bogeys late in his round on the back nine, Pangle carded a 5-over-par 41 and ended up shooting 77 for the day. His closest pursuers fell even farther behind and while Lamanuzzi played outstanding golf over the final nine holes, shooting a 1-over-par 37, it was too little too late. Pangle’s 77 was more than enough as runner-up Lamanuzzi finished second with 81. Mendoza placed in solo third with an 84 while Jolin shot 86 to come in fourth.
In the net division, Todd Colbrandt of Middletown recorded a 65 to finish atop the leader board. John Flynn of Cobb was two strokes back at 67 while Ken Kellner of Kelseyville carded a 70. Rick Tracy of Kelseyville came in with a 74 and Mike Menasco of Lower Lake finished with a 75.
A total of 12 golfers age 50 and older participated in this year’s tournament. Two-time defending Schampion Chris Fisher of Roseville had scheduling conflicts and was unable to seek a third straight title.
The next event on the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit calendar is the Lake County Partners Two Man Better Ball Championship scheduled for June 25 at Buckingham. Entries are available by contacting the Buckingham Pro Shop.
