Lake County >> The Long-Term-Care Ombudsman program is seeking volunteers to become certified ombudsmen and advocate for improvement in the quality of care and life for residents of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in Lake and Mendocino counties.

“Ombudsmen work to resolve problems and concerns of individual residents by creating a presence through regular unannounced visits, monitoring conditions and care, and providing a voice for those unable to speak for themselves,” states the Area Agency on Aging of Lake & Mendocino Counties website, which administers the program. “Staff and state certified ombudsman volunteers are authorized by federal and state law to visit nursing homes, residential care and assisted living facilities to ensure that residents’ rights are protected and that they are treated with dignity and are receiving quality care.”

If interested in becoming an ombudsman, the Swedish workd for advocate, applications are available online at http://www.co.lake.ca.us/Government/Directory/Social_Services/AAA/LongTerm.htm or call(707) 262-4525.
