Thanks for the support

Thank you to all who have encouraged and supported my candidacy for District 1 Supervisor.

Special thanks to my husband, Dave, my son Russell and his girlfriend Cassie and all those who took time from their busy schedules to help achieve a winning result in the June 7th Primary Election.

I also want to say thank you to Congressman Mike Thompson, Assemblymember Bill Dodd, Board of Equalization Chairwoman Fiona Ma and the many other community members, leaders and organizations who supported me in this effort.

Finally, thank you to the other three candidates. Their active engagement makes South Lake County a better place for all of us.

I am proud of the positive, issue-oriented campaign we conducted. I applaud Voris, Moke and Jim for maintaining a respectful yet challenging District 1 Supervisor Race.

As we move to the November runoff election, I will continue to speak out on the issues of concern to local residents, work toward full recovery from the fires of 2015, and to highlight my vision and commitment for Lake County’s future.

Thank you again for your help, your encouragement and your support.

Fight bigotry

If faith based local churches across our nation would not be allowed a tax exemption if part of the activities was human sacrifice or child abuse, why are they allowed to receive any tax exemptions if they are segregated? I am 74 years old, and to see any area that lessons the rights of any of my fellow citizens of this nation, being given a blind eye too, as the greatest reason we have not in so many ways, treated each other as equals.

We give the power to our political leadership to ensure that we are all treated fairly and equally and the fact is have been cheated with the failure for those in power to keep their word and responsibility. The human race is born with some degree of bigotry and it is each of our own personal fights to reduce this fact as much as we can within our lifetimes. As a parent of 9 kids, I did my part to address the evil of bigotry, only to have my kids feel my words were not true as they traveled around our nation and saw the amount of segregation that was openly used by many regional faith based organizations.

I would like to hear from you. Why is this being allowed? Thank you, Jim Hall A life long lily white American citizen.

Self Termination

I am pleased that the assisted self-termination law is in place. High time, although I hope this will only the first step in a more refined ordinance. At present, I feel, the roll of a physician is over emphasized, the “wait” unnecessary, the term “terminal disease” limits the application, and the role of the person who has decision power when the patient is unable to make decisions is undeveloped.

I do think it is necessary to control fatal doses by prescription, although I think rationality suggests medication can be found in many (informal) places. I think that “life” is a gift to be responsibly administered by the living person who has the “right” to live or die. No one should be forced to live or die by others in normal situations. I think a person’s decisions should be honored and that there should be no stigma connected to suicide. I am sure that there will always be people who will be unhappy with such an action, but I suspect that when a patient gets to the mental state where death is seen as a release, their action should be accepted.

It would be wrong not to mention “economics” at this point. Medical statistics suggest that the vast amount of expense is incurred in the last year of life, and most of that in the last month. If a patient is able to evaluate her/his status, is thoughtful and responsible, he may choose to take action to spare his family the high costs of both medical and physical care. This has to be the patient’s decision or that of the patient’s designee and should be shared with family.

To me, death should not be a frightening thing, certainly not for those who have led a loving, loved, and protective life. If we are happy with the results of our life, that should be reward enough. Additionally, to judge from many obituaries, many look forward to meeting their Saviour and/or rejoining loved ones. In any case, I suspect death will not affect one’s memory, or that of their loved ones.

These are my thoughts and opinions and in no way considered an attempt to convince or convert others.

Lakeport’s “common sense”

I went to the board meeting on Tuesday. Main Street, the surrounding side streets, around the Courthouse is pretty well torn up as is in front of the old court house. I was in the meeting 2 hours 10 minutes. When I returned back to my pickup I had a parking ticket on the window for $38.00.

I did park more than 2 hours and I knew what the sign said and I will pay for my ticket. But on the other hand, if I went to the barber shop and got a hair cut and waited in line as people normally do, then had lunch someplace in town I would have probably used up that time plus another 10-15 minutes.

I don’t care so much about me but what about the business people in town that are trying to survive as that same thing could happen to one of their customers. This is why we have a lot of empty and struggling business in town because the City of Lakeport is not business friendly in any shape or form. Every time you turn around they have their hands out for more and the business people in town do not even count. The same thing that happened to me could happen to one of their customers at any one of the businesses. I have watched the attitude of the City of Lakeport in the last 60-plus years and it is getting worse instead of better.

So until they change their attitude and become “business friendly” in the City of Lakeport the trend of business closing and very few businesses opening will get worse and not better, it is time for the City to face all facts open mindedly with common sense thinking.
