Twelve-year-old Josh Marchais is ecstatic. “This is the best place to be on Saturday mornings. It’s worth giving up other things.” said the Lake County boy, a member of the Young Writers Workshop at the County Library in Lakeport.

There’s still room for more in the group which will meet for six additional weeks, Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The writers, who are in grades 5 through 12, hope to publish their works in a small book which will be made available at summer’s end.

“I really like finding new ways to write that I had never heard of before,” Marchais said, “and by combining these things, it makes me a better writer. You get to create your own stories with other people who like to do the same things.”

The facilitator for these sessions is Robin C. Harris, local author and educator. “The more kids we can get involved, the better our chances of getting their names in print,” Harris observed. “This is a meaningful activity for them, and they’re having a wonderful time. They’re learning how to ‘hook’ their reader, create a character, build their premise into a coherent plot, and keep things moving with great dialogue. We’re working with poetry, too. It’s just incredible fun.”

There’s no need to register. Just show up at 10 with a three-ring notebook. Everything else is supplied. The group will meet each Saturday except July 2, for six more sessions.
