REDDING >> The first ever “Lift-’Em-Up” event for the Good News Rescue Mission has been rescheduled to August 11 after heavy rain and winds put the kibosh on all but one round on May 20.
Organizers had hoped “Lift-Em-Up” would help the Mission hit it’s annual fund raising goal for its fiscal year which ended May 31. But, only one round was completed of the five scheduled. So, after a one-hour fund raising duel atop a wet and wobbly hydraulic scissor lift Redding Vice-Mayor Brent Weaver, trails Mission Executive Director Jonathan Anderson in the fundraising competition with six teams yet to compete.
“We’ve learned not to question God’s timing,” noted Anderson. “He knew the weather was coming, so we’re excited to see how He’ll use this.”
Lift-Em-Up” was structured as a brief two month fundraising campaign that encouraged business, churches and service clubs to creatively raise money by hosting their own small-scale fund raisers or simply by asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them. At the event, teams were to compete atop a scissor lift in one final hour-long fund raising push as they were lifted up in proportion to their team’s overall fund raising success, with the top lift declared the winning team. The Mission had hoped to raise $50,000 overall and still needs roughly $20,000 to hit that mark.
“This event, the title, everything was designed around lifting people up in our community,” said Mission Event Coordinator, Sabrina Charlson, “because for many just a little help can get them back on their feet again.”
Teams slated to appear were Cronic Disaster Services, InterWest Insurance, Brent Weaver, Jonathan Anderson and even a group of alumni from the Mission’s New Life Recovery Program. Weaver and Anderson were the only two who were able to complete their round.
Due to the rescheduling, some slots are now open for the competition. Donations can be made in person, through the mail, over the phone or on the Mission’s website at https://gnrm.org/lift-em-up. The Mission said that another way to help is by sharing the event on social media.
