CLEARLAKE >> A Karina Palo man remains in intensive care after a collision Wednesday in which neither driver involved carried a license and insurance.

Michael Ashinhurst was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by Air Ambulancewith critical injuries.

According to Clearlake Police Lt. Tim Celli, Ashinhurst was pulling onto Arrowhead Rd. in Clearlake at approximately 11:50 a.m., intending to head south. His car entered the road directly in the path of a car driven by David Shipman Jr., 25 of Clearlake, who was traveling north.

“Shipman was unable to stop before hitting the Volkswagon directly on the driver door of the Volkswagon,” Celli said in a press statement.

Both vehicles came to rest just off the roadway of Arrowhead Road. Both vehicles were totaled in the collision.

Investigators have yet to determine Shipman’s speed at the time of the accident. However, Celli pointed out, “it does not appear that alcoholic beverages or narcotics are a factor.”

The initial call suggested Ashinhurst had been ejected from the vehicle as a result of the impact. Officers arrived on scene and discovered three people injured, though none had been ejected.

Two individuals involved were lying on the ground and one individual was stuck inside one of the vehicles.

Shipman and a passenger in Ashinhurst’s car were later treated at St. Helena Hospital Clearlake for their injuries which were determined to be non critical.

Routine checks, revealed neither Ashinhurst nor Shipman had valid driver licenses. In addition, neither party was insured for the vehicles they were driving.

Arrowhead Road from Modoc to Country Club Road was closed for a little over an hour during the investigation.
