BUCKINGHAM >> In Lake County’s junior golfing circles, Matt Wotherspoon is so far ahead of the competition these days it’s a little bit scary.

The incoming junior at Kelseyville High School, a two-time All-Coastal Mountain Conference selection for the Knights, has simply dominated the opposition at Lake County’s two junior golf tournaments of note, the Buckingham Summer Junior Golf Championship and the Lake County Junior Golf Championship.

Heading into the 24th annual Summer Junior on Aug. 1 at Buckingham Golf and Country Club and the 23rd annual Lake County Junior on Aug. 2 at Adams Springs Golf Course, Wotherspoon is once again the prohibitive favorite. A year ago at the Lake County Junior he won his third straight title, the longest streak of victories in the tournament’s boys’ division and tying him for the most boys’ wins overall with Doug Quinones of Middletown, who also won the tournament three times (2004, 2006, 2007).

If Wotherspoon captures a fourth straight title on Aug. 2, he will be the winningest boy in the tournament’s history. Only former Middletown High School star Lisa Copeland won the Lake County Junior more times (with six straight victories from 2004-09).

Wotherspoon is also seeking a third consecutive Summer Junior title on Aug. 1 at Buckingham. He fired a 4-over-par 76 a year ago to run away with the title. His winning round at last year’s Lake County Junior was 7-over-par 75, resulting in another runaway win.

The Summer Junior is open to boys and girls ages 8-17 and golfers are divided into several age flights. The Lake County Junior is open to boys and girls ages 10-17 and is also divided into age flights. The entry fee is only $15 for each tournament.
