Lakeport >> Police say they discovered an extensive amount of burglary tools Tuesday night as they checked for criminal activity.
Clearlake resident Robert Lyle McGrew was reportedly driving without using headlights just before midnight when two Lakeport police officers in the 400 block of Martin Street spotted the vehicle on South Brush Street.
The officers pulled him over and found out that McGrew, 30, was driving on a suspended license and had multiple priors for the same violation, Lakeport Chief Brad Rasmussen said in press release Wednesday afternoon. McGrew was then placed into police custody and transported to the Lake County Correctional Facility.
Prior to impounding the truck, officers conducted an inventory search and allegedly found numerous items of contraband, including three glass methamphetamine smoking pipes and .3 gram of methamphetamine. Police also found shaved keys; lock picks and punches; flashlights; pliers; torches, drill and a C02 BB gun that resembled a revolver, all items typically used in burglaries.
“The fact that McGrew was caught and arrested likely prevented other crimes in the area,” Rasmussen said.
McGrew has also been arrested several times before on possession of burglary tools, drug related violations, resisting arrest, vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.
He now faces misdemeanor charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license and for possession of burglary tools.
