LAKEPORT >> If you have been meaning to catch a Shakespeare play but haven’t been able to travel afar to do so, now is your chance. Shakespeare’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be performed at Library Park in Lakeport on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. And the best part is that admission is absolutely free. All you need is a blanket or lawn chair.

Brought to you by Mendocino College Lake Center and the Lake County Theater Company, this is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The Lake County Friends of Mendocino College invite you to share the evening with them in Library Park.

The plot offers many twists. Lysander and Hermia plan to elope, against the wishes of her father. He wants her to marry Demetrius, who is being pursued by Helena. Meeting in the woods, the four erstwhile lovers are joined by a band of tradesmen who are putting on a play, and a group of fairies who are up to their usual mischief. The king of the fairies plans to use a magic love potion to punish his queen, who has disagreed with him. However, Puck, a mischievous sprite, manages to mess the whole plan up and actually uses the potion on Lysander, who then falls in love with Helena. Lysander challenges Demetrius to a duel for the hand of Helena, leaving poor Hermia on the sidelines.

This merry mix up of lovers leads to much confusion and fun. To see how the whole thing turns out you have to be there.

Major sponsors for the event are the Law Office of Judy Conard, Strong Financial Network, Tomkins Tax Consultants, Lakeport Main Street Association, Education Leadership Solutions, Rotary Club of Lakeport, and The Smith Family Trust.

This event is free of admission charge. The event organizers have worked hard to be sure that no bird droppings will interfere with your enjoyment of the play.

Reserved seating is no longer available.
