Lakeport >> Police have arrested a sex offender out of Sonoma County after it was discovered he broke his parole working at a Kelseyville grocery store.

The Sonoma County Probation Department was unaware that John David Heglin, 57, was employed more than 50 miles away from his home, which requires prior approval. They were contacted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Friday after it received a tip that the Santa Rosa resident was working as a cashier locally.

Heglin, who was on Post Release Community Supervision in Sonoma County, was a cashier in Kelseyville for about a month. Under his specific probation terms, he had to report his employment within three business days, which he failed to do, and the job was prohibited because of the distance and lack of approval, LCSO Lt. Steve Brooks reported.

On Saturday, the LCSO detective leading the investigation contacted Heglin during a traffic stop in Lakeport. The detective searched Heglin’s vehicle, based on the terms of his probation, and found a smart phone and an “Application for Delivery of Mail Through Agent.” Heglin was not allowed to use a post office box or be in possession of a smart phone.

He was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender and for violating the terms of his probation. Heglin was transported to the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility.
