BUCKINGHAM >> Matt Wotherspoon won his third consecutive Buckingham Summer Junior Golf Championship on Monday by shooting an even-par 72 at Buckingham Golf and Country Club. Wotherspoon, a two-time all-conference golfer for Kelseyville High School and a three-time winner of the Lake County Junior, opened play on the front nine with a 1-over-par 37 that included a birdie on the second hole. His back-nine score of 35 included birdies on the 10th, 12th and 13th holes alongside an eagle-three on the par-5 16th hole. There were several withdrawals prior to the start of the tournament and Wotherspoon was the only golfer in his age flight. Wotherspoon’s ball striking was consistently solid throughout his round.
In the girls’ division, Sarah Parlee of Lakeport carded a 55 for nine holes to win her overall flight. It is the second consecutive win in the Buckingham Junior for Parlee, a 13-year-old who will be entering the eighth grade at Terrace Middle School later this month. Maddie Witt of Clear Lake Riviera shot 64 and finished second to Parlee. She won her age division in the girls’ 14-15 age flight. Witt will be entering Kelseyville High School next month.
Charles Johnson of Kelseyville captured the boys’ 8-11 age flight, shooting a 37 over a six-hole course setup for the younger boys. Johnson won his age flight in the Buckingham Junior last year as well. Billy Witt of Clear Lake Riviera shot a 46 to come in second.
All five golfers who competed in Monday’s Buckingham Junior are entered in the field at the Lake County Junior today at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain. Wotherspoon tees off at 8 a.m. while Parlee and Maddie Witt have the 8:08 a.m. tee time. Witt is the defending girls’ champion. Johnson and Billy Witt are on the first tee at 8:16 a.m.
