COBB >> Matt Wotherspoon made it four in a row as he captured the 23rd annual Lake County Junior Golf Championship on Tuesday morning at Adams Springs Golf Course.

Wotherspoon was the only contestant in the boys’ championship flight as a couple of his fellow competitors had to pull out of the tournament at the last second with injuries. He carded a 12-over-par 80 that featured a 5-over-par 39 with a pair of birdies on the front nine. His back-nine 41 included a birdie on the par-3 11th hole.

The incoming junior at Kelseyville High School struggled with his putting throughout the course of the round and had some water issues on the par-5 14th hole.

No boy has won this tournament more times – or more times consecutively – than the 16-year-old Wotherspoon, who now has one more title than former Middletown High School and Kansas University golfer Doug Quinones. Wotherspoon continues to play an active schedule on the NCGA Junior Tour and the Junior Golf Association of Northern California Tour.

Girls

In the girls’ division, Maddie Witt of Clear Lake Riviera shot a 104 over the course of 18 holes to outlast Sarah Parlee of Lakeport and win her second consecutive Lake County Junior title. She shot 54 on the front nine and returned to shoot 50 on the back nine. Parlee carded a 110 to finish second overall in addition to winning the girls’ 12-13 age division. Witt will be entering Kelseyville High School in September while Parlee will be entering the eighth grade at Terrace Middle School in Lakeport next week.

Juniors

Charles Johnson of Kelseyville shot a 51 while winning the boys’ 10-11 age division. Johnson had a number of long tee shots during the course of his nine-hole round. Billy Witt of Clear Lake Riviera shot a 70 for nine holes to win the boys’ 8-9 age flight.

The Lake County Junior Golf Championship is sponsored by the Clearlake Callayomi Masonic Lodge, Adams Springs Golf Course owners Eddie and Linda Mullins, Jack and Sharon Lucich, John and Julie Berry, the Buckingham Tournament Players Club, and the Buckingham 59ers.
