A helpful man
Driving down the highway from Lakeport on our way home to Clearlake my husband and I hear an unusual sound and pull off the road not far from the winery in Kelseyville. It’s a flat tire.
We’re seniors, not incapacitated, but not, shall we say, in our prime either. As we get out the jack and start to loosen the spare, traffic zooms by in both directions. Then a big pick up heading towards Lakeport passes us, slows, backs up off the road and a man jumps out and says “need any help?” He then proceeded to change the tire as we stood by chatting.
And who was this hero without the usual cape and tights you ask? Rob Brown.
Having lived in Lake County many years I have read and heard about Rob Brown. He’s a guy who helps people. And now you can add our names to the big, big list of people that Rob Brown has helped.
Thank you, Mr. Brown!

Ideas and values must change
I am pleased that the candidates have seen fit to outline their plans for the economy. They are not all that specific, but they give the voters something to think about other than personal attacks.
Two things to consider: Any changes will have to be a mix of administrative and congressional desires, not solely those of the new president; and we should recall that one of the greatest credits to the Reagan administration was its recognition of the ineffectiveness of “trickle down” and the restoration of prior tax rates to enable the country to pay its bills.
The American people are (increasingly) far too emotional to make effective objective economists. We maintain that no one should be allowed to die for lack of shelter, food, or medical attention. Additionally we revere “life”, go to great lengths to avoid death (even when it is the most rational course), and go to great expense for treatments and medicines that are designed far less to “cure” than to ameliorate pain and lengthen non productive lives at the cost of many family’s financial stability.
We have unreal ideas as to the value of a human life both in terms of emotion and economics. A lot of these ideas and values are going to have to change — perhaps over decades — if our country is to escape encumbering our younger, more productive citizens with a growing horde of too old, non productive, but demanding seniors.
Or, of course, we could decide to raise enough revenue to pay for it all!

A special teacher
I read an article about a special teacher by the name of Overholser in the Lake County Record-Bee. I thought about the years when I went to school at Clear Lake Union High School — 1942-1946.
There was this Art/Mechanical Drawing class teacher by the name of Mariom Fraser. She was very special — so special, in fact, that I took four years of Art and four years of Mechanical Drawing from her. Perhaps what she taught me shows a bit in my printing, even now.
In my class there were very smart girls. Most of the boys were rowdy, including myself. However, Mariom Fraser never sent us to Mr. Ledbetter’s office.
Instead she had us do laps around the track.
I will never forget my teacher. She was kind, gentle and effective.

Open letter to Donald Trump
Hi there, Mr. Trump. You have told us all many times how very rich you are. Your personal fortune is HUGE. You have also said that you give generously to charity.
Now, we all know how much you like to put your name on everything you own. So, can you please tell me exactly where is the Trump Children’s Hospital or the Trump Cancer Research Center, or possibly the Trump Family Charitable Trust?
Also, if you are elected as president, will you live in the White House? If so, will it be called Trump House, or will you turn that building into condominiums and rule us all from the penthouse of Trump Tower? And will we all be living in the United States of Trump?
And speaking as the widow of two veterans, the mother of a veteran and the grandmother of a veteran, I would like to ask you when you or any of your children actually put your lives on the line in the service of these United States of America?
An answer would be much appreciated.
