UPPER LAKE >> Upper Lake’s defense turned in a strong first half before the Kelseyville Knights took control in the second half and went on to beat the Cougars 8-0 in a non-league girls’ soccer game on Saturday at Upper Lake.

Kelseyville (1-0) led 2-0 after the first half but didn’t score its first goal until 16 minutes into the game.

“The first half the girls looked great,” Upper Lake coach Mandy Robbins said. “We have 15 players right now, which isn’t bad. It’s the best team we’ve had in the last couple of years.”

Kelseyville began to assert itself in the second half as the Upper Lake defense tired.

“They were in better shape than we were,” Robbins said of the Knights.

Kelseyville finished with 17 shots on goal while Upper Lake, now 0-2 on the season, had 11.

“We had our chances, but we couldn’t get the ball into the net,” Robbins said.

Standouts for the Cougars were keeper Jazlyn Bonilla, who had nine saves, and defender/midfielder Cheyanne Obedoza.

“She rocked it on defense, rocked it in the midfield,” Robbins said of Obedoza, a junior.

Kelseyville scoring was not reported.

Upper Lake returns to action Friday at home against South Fork at 4:30 p.m. The Kelseyville girls are scheduled to host Anderson Valley on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
