Geriatric thoughts

Here’s a thought … why don’t the good ol’ boys who continue to write their letters to the editor on an almost daily basis just email each other and save the rest of us the painful experience of seeing their opinions in print? I for one, skip the opinion page when I see who submitted their rhetoric for the day.

Maybe the Record-Bee could just rename the page “Geriatric Thoughts of the Day”. Or maybe, just limit the letters to a couple a month for each person.

“Great”

I am sick and tired of continually seeing and hearing the slogan “Let’s make America great again!” It not only infers that my America is not great, but certainly based on a look at the other countries in the world, it is a lie, certainly if economies, defense spending, and lifestyles are used as measuring criteria.

And this brings up another important point, those that tend to use the slogan never offer a (their) definition of “great,” nor do they offer areas or examples where they consider America is not great.

Certainly America is not perfect, but, to me, it is “great.”

No to Measure Z, unless …

This argument against Measure Z is largely based on the City of Lakeport’s inappropriate management of the last tax measure the city asked us to approve.

In 2004 Lakeport voters approved Measure I, which enacted a half-cent sales tax, with no ending date, the major portion of which was supposed to address deferred maintenance of Lakeport’s streets. Based on the city’s current revenue estimates, Measure I could have raised $750,000 annually.

Lakeport’s recently adopted budget cut $460,000 out of the city’s road budget and the City Council has continuously reallocated Measure I funds to other purposes.

Measure Z proposes a 1 percent sales tax increase, which also has no ending date.

Any increase in sales tax should be mainly designated to citywide street restoration and maintenance or our City Council will again not fix your street that is turning to gravel or has pothole patches on top of pothole patches. We can hardly get striping done. Evaluation of conditions of our streets has been done by consultants.

Please note any additional sales tax increase of 1 cent per dollar will take us to 9 cents per dollar.

Unless the City Council makes a firm commitment before the November election to urgently needed repair and ongoing maintenance of city streets, Measure Z should be rejected.

Editor’s Note: We no longer have a community desk staff and have not for some months. One of the duties of the community desk is to enter hard copy letters into our electronic files. In the absence of this person, there often will be a delay before we can get to letters submitted on paper. We apologize to our readers who do not use email for this.
