SANTA ROSA >> After bursting upon the Lake County cross country scene a year ago as a freshman, Kelseyville High School sophomore Andre Williams III is off to a pretty good start in 2016.
While the Knights won’t compete in their first race until the Lake County Meet next week, the 14-year-old Williams claimed the 5-kilometer men’s title on Sunday at the eighth annual Santa Rosa Marathon with a sizzling time of 16 minutes, 49.42 seconds. Williams won the 13-15 boys’ division as well as posting the top 5K time overall out of 758 runners.
Williams averaged 5:25 per mile.
As a freshman at Kelseyville High School in 2015, Williams helped lead the Knights to the North Central League I championship at the Coastal Mountain Conference finals. He posted the top individual time among NCL I boys and was ninth overall in the CMC.
The Santa Rosa Marathon consists of several races – full marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K.
Williams was one of many members of the Lake County Milers taking part. Another Miler, 65-year-old Mike Addis of Hidden Valley Lake, completed the 26.2-mile marathon course in 3 hours, 41 minutes, 37.63 seconds to win the 65-69 men’s division. He was 299th overall out of 711 men. More importantly, his time qualifies him for next year’s Boston Marathon. He averaged 8:27 per mile.
