LAKEPORT >> John David Heglin switched attorneys during a court appearance last week. The 57 year old Sonoma County resident accused of failing to register as a sex offender appeared with Defense Attorney, David Markham at the Lake County Superior Courthouse in Lakeport. However, Attorney Evan Zelig informed the Court he had been retained to represent Heglin.

Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrested Heglin on July 29 after learning that he was working as a cashier in a Kelseyville grocery. Such employment, some 50 miles from his home, violated parole conditions.

Heglin was under a community supervision program in Sonoma County, which required approval from the county Probation Department to work outside the area. He had worked in Kelseyville for a month before his arrest.

Heglin has failed to register as a sex offender and was in possession of prohibited items when taken into custody.

Judge Andrew Blum presided over the Preliminary Examination, while Deputy District Attorney Edward Borg was present in court as well.

At the request of Attorney Zelig, the Court ordered the Preliminary Hearing continued to Sept. 26 at 8:15 a.m. in Department 3. The defendant is ordered to be present.
