UPPER LAKE >> Alberto Solano’s penalty kick put Upper Lake on the scoreboard and prevented the Cougars from losing by shutout to Technology High School of Rohnert Park in North Central League II boys’ soccer action on Friday in Upper Lake.

Upper Lake fell to 0-2 in league play and 0-2 overall with the 8-1 loss.

“It was not a good showing on our part unfortunately,” Upper Lake coach Kevin O’Brien said of the Cougars’ second game in three days. “There weren’t many positives to take out of it.”

One of those positives was Solano’s goal, the Cougars’ first score of the season. He is the only senior on Upper Lake’s roster.

“He snuck it in under the goalie,” O’Brien said of Solano’s shot.

Technology built a 6-0 lead in the first half.

Upper Lake dropped an 8-0 decision to Rincon Valley Christian in its season and league opener on Wednesday at Upper Lake. The Cougars had a handful of games scheduled for August but were unable to play them because they did not have enough players at the time. They had 18 players in uniform against Rincon Valley Christian, including four borrowed from the football team in case some fresh legs were needed.

“I didn’t see much improvement from our first game,” O’Brien said. “But now we’ve got some time to work on things in practice.”

The Cougars have an entire week to prepare for their next game, which is next Friday at home against Anderson Valley at 4:30 p.m. A scheduled game Wednesday at Geyserville has been postponed.
