KELSEYVILLE >> Aiden McAdon’s interception in the end zone with 78 seconds left to play sealed Kelseyville’s 27-21 upset victory over the St. Helena Saints on Friday night in the North Central League I opener for both teams at Kelseyville.
St. Helena (0-1 league, 1-1 overall) pushed the ball down to the Kelseyville 5-yard line before a penalty backed them up to the 18. On a second-and-goal play from there, McAdon came down with the interception for a touchback.
Earlier in the fourth quarter the Knights (1-0 league, 2-0 overall) went ahead to stay on Logan Barrick’s third touchdown pass of the night, this one a 38-yarder to Dwayne Yiggins, who turned a short completion into a game-winning play, breaking tackles along the way. Barrick’s two-point conversion pass to Bryan Carillo gave the Knights a six-point cushion.
“For us to rally back says a lot about the character of our kids,” Kelseyville coach Erick Larsen said.
Kelseyville led 13-0 early in the second quarter but St. Helena rallied front 14-13 by halftime and had a 21-19 lead before Yiggins’ touchdown catch.
“We said this would be a measuring-stick game for our program to see how far we’ve come along,” Larsen said. “I feel proud.”
Barrick also completed a pair of touchdown passes to Gideon Turner, the wide receiver’s only two catches of the night. Yiggins rushed for a team-best 135 yards, including a 2-yard scoring run in the first quarter that gave Kelseyville a 6-0 lead.
Kelseyville’s defense picked off three St. Helena passes in all and J.D. Prescott anchored the unit with 11 solo tackles, four assists and three tackles for losses.
