LOWER LAKE >> Freshman Allison Bryant pounded out 12 kills as the Kelseyville Knights swept the Lower Lake Trojans 25-11, 25-22, 25-11 in the North Central League I opener for both of these varsity volleyball squads on Tuesday in Kelseyville.
The Knights (1-0) are gunning for a second straight league title and their third in four years.
Kelseyville setter Riley Goff, last year’s league MVP, had 26 assists while Payton Conrad led the team with 12 digs. Lauren Rudnick had four aces and led the team in the passing department, according to coach Donelle McCallister.
For Lower Lake (0-1), Jolean Scarborough had five service points and three kills, Shayna Pike led the team with five kills, and Marissa Almeda had three kills and four points.
“We definitely played better against them this time than we have in the past,” Lower Lake coach Darcie Schmidt said.
In the junior varsity match, Kelseyville received six kills and four aces from Emma Larsen, five kills from Alexa Vargas and four kills and eight assists from Paige Bour in a 25-11, 25-8 league-opening win over Lower Lake.
“They are definitely out there to win,” Kelseyville coach Deanna Goff said of the Knights. “They’re talking out there, helping each other out.”
Malia Brown had two kills and five assists for Kelseyville while teammate Grace Duty added three aces and three digs.

Clear Lake def. M’town
At Lakeport, the Clear Lake Cardinals pretty much ran on auto pilot in their NCL I opener against Middletown, winning 25-13, 25-19, 25-16.
“It just all fell into place,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said of her team’s play. “We passed, we set, we hit. It was automatic.”
The Cardinals (1-0) committed only four serve receive errors on the night. “Which is just amazing,” Psalmonds said.
Kiana Richardson led a balanced hitting attack up front with nine kills while Valerie Hutton and Camille Donald each had seven kills. Two other standouts were setter Kylie Udy with 24 assists and libero Madi Ferguson with 14 points, four aces and seven digs.
“All my hitters did their job,” Psalmonds said. “It was a group effort tonight.”
Brittney Holt’s six kills, seven assists and two blocks led the Mustangs (0-1) while Abbey Brown had five kills and three blocks.
“We had a few too many errors,” Middletown coach Jennifer Breiner said. “But I’m really happy with them. They’re improving every day.”
Clear Lake won the JV match 19-25, 25-20, 15-7 behind 11 service points from Shalyn McIntire and seven points and four aces from Lilli Hill.
Upper Lake def. RCP
At Santa Rosa, Kejhana Taylor’s 10 kills helped power the Upper Lake Cougars to a sweep of Roseland Collegiate Prep 25-12, 25-10, 25-18 in the NCL II opener for both teams.
“Everybody did what they were supposed to do,” Upper Lake coach Raelene Cromwell said of the Cougars, now 6-1 overall.
Christina Wilson added eight kills, Brenna Sanchez had seven, Isabel Rorabaugh finished with six and Natalie Karlsson, the team’s setter, chipped in with five more. Karlsson also had 17 assists while Rorabaugh had three aces.
Upper Lake also won the JV match 25-11, 27-25 behind the play of Madison Brackett with five aces, Adriana Lopez with five digs, Angelica Ayala with three aces and two digs, Rebecca Harper with four aces and two kills, Destiny Bulik with six digs, and Maria Wade with four aces.
Boys’ soccer
Clear Lake 3, M’town 3 (tie) At Middletown, Luis Munoz scored two goals and Kevin Chavez had two assists as the Clear Lake boys’ soccer team tied the Middletown Mustangs in the NCL I debut for both teams.
Clear Lake (0-0-1 league, 1-0-2 overall) led 2-1 and 3-2 in the second half.
“Every time we scored our defense would break down a little bit,” Clear Lake coach Tony Paskaly said. “There’s nothing they did that wasn’t helped by us.”
Alex Beare had the other Clear Lake goal and Munoz also had an assist.
Clear Lake keeper Rigo Mendez logged 14 saves in a game where Middletown had 17 shots on goal to Clear Lake’s 10.
“He played great,” Paskaly said.
Another standout on the Clear Lake defense was Simon Celle, according to Paskaly.
Einar Monroy scored twice for Middletown but it was Ricardo Chaires’ goal with 10 minutes remaining that knotted the score at 3.
Lower Lake 4, K’ville 4 (tie)
At Kelseyville, Lower Lake scored three times in the second half to earn a draw with Kelseyville in the NCL I opener for both teams.
The second goal of the game by Gerardo Rodriguez pulled Lower Lake even with only two minutes remaining. Nester Arroyo and Jose Martinez also scored for the Trojans.
“They came back strong in the second half,” Lower Lake coach Javier Michel said.
Kelseyville led 2-1 after one half.
Kelseyville scoring was not reported.
Girls’ soccer
K’ville 8, Lower Lake 0
At Kelseyville, Kat Brown, Sayra Cacho and Ruby Mulgrew scored two goals apiece as the Kelseyville Knights beat the Lower Lake Trojans in the NCL I opener for both teams.
Dani Valerio and Stephanie Corona also scored for the Knights, who are 4-1-1 on the season.
Mulgrew also finished with two assists as did Christina Covarrubias.
Kelseyville led 6-0 after one half.
