LAKEPORT >> James Thomas West, 41, appeared with Defense Attorney Komnith Moth at the Lake County Superior Court in Lakeport, requesting a continuance with no opposition.

West is charged with Being a Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Person Prohibited in Possession Of Ammunition, Manufacturing Deadly Weapon: Zip Gun, Carrying Loaded Firearm in Public Place and Evading Peace Officer-Safety.

The charges stem from an August incident when the felon, West, allegedly attempted to evade police, crashing into a parked car with enough force to strike a second vehicle which then hit a tree. West was driving at a speed that was double the posted limit. West allegedly took off on foot, and when the police finally did catch up to him, they found a loaded homemade firearm between the driver’s seat and the center console of West’s vehicle.

Judge Andrew Blum presided over the Preliminary Examination, while Deputy District Attorney Rachel Abelson was present in court as well.

The Court ordered the Preliminary Hearing continued to Sept. 26 at 8:15 a.m. in Department Three. The defendant is ordered to be present.
