Hidden Valley Lake >> For the fifth year in Lake County, private classes are being offered for beginners to learn the wine making process.

Long-time resident Channing Rudd came to Lake County in 1980 and founded Channing Rudd Cellars on a mountain top near Guenoc. Having sold the vineyard and winery in 1997, he has worked at various wineries in Napa and Sonoma, presently at Robert Mondavi and Franciscan and lives in Hidden Valley Lake.

Rudd planted 34 varieties of grapes in 2005, and the class will pick the grapes on Eagle Rock Road sometime in September and October, then crush and ferment them. Later in 2017 students will do the bottling and each person will get a case of their own wine to enjoy.

The cost for the class, which includes the case of wine, is $225.

Call Rudd at 987-2020 for availability as only five or six students may be accepted.
