UPPER LAKE >> The Upper Lake Cougars are on a bit of a roll after shutting out Roseland Collegiate Prep 5-0 in a North Central League II girls’ soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at Upper Lake High School.

The Cougars’ second straight shutout victory – they blanked Anderson Valley 3-0 on Monday – gives them a 2-2 league record and a 3-4 overall mark.

“We had some great defense,” Upper Lake coach Mandy Robbins said of the strong play of keeper Jazlyn Bonilla, who registered her third shutout of the season, and defenders Miranda Huntley, Mallory Henry and Laisha Altamirano.

Roseland Collegiate Prep had just seven shots on goal while Upper Lake had 12.

Julia Mooney’s hat trick and two more goals from Rebecca Garner accounted for all of Upper Lake’s scoring. Mooney also was credited with an assist while Stephanie Macias led the Cougars with two.

Upper Lake had the game well in hand with a 4-0 lead after one half.

“Garner and Mooney were connecting,” Robbins said of her forwards.

Chelsie Valdez assisted on Mooney’s goal in the second half that made it 5-0.

Upper Lake shoots for a third victory in a row Wednesday at home against Tomales at 4:30 p.m.
