MIDDLETOWN >> The Kelseyville Knights had a 8-6 lead in the first quarter, but that proved to be their only highlight as the Middletown Mustangs roared back for a 40-8 win in North Central League I varsity football action on Friday night at Bill Foltmer Field.

Middletown (1-0 league, 1-2 overall) ran over the Kelseyville defense as running back John Kelley had 115 yards and two touchdowns while backfield mate Ty Chorjel added 91 yards on 15 carries.

The Mustangs scored the game’s final 34 points, including a 20-0 second quarter that pushed their halftime lead to 34-8.

Robbie Carey’s 69-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown was one of the highlights in Middletown’s big second quarter, which also featured touchdown runs of 6 yards by Kelley and 11 yards by Nate Holguin.

So effective was Middletown’s running game that quarterback Luke Holt attempted only two passes, completing one for 28 yards.

Other than giving up a 33-yard TD run to Kelseyville’s Patrick Mick in the first quarter, the Middletown defense shut the Knights down, forcing three turnovers, including two Chorjel interceptions.

Kelseyville is now 1-1 in league and 2-1 overall.

Middletown hits the road next Friday to play Lower Lake (1-1, 2-2) while Kelseyville hosts South Fork in a non-league, its homecoming.

Kelseyville’s junior varsity squad fared significantly better, beating Middletown 34-7.
