LAKEPORT >> Quarterback Alex Adams completed touchdown passes to Brandon Orozco and Austin Davis in the first quarter as the Clear Lake Cardinals rolled past the St. Vincent Mustangs 48-13 in North Central League I varsity football action on Friday night at Don Owens Stadium.
Clear Lake (1-1 league, 2-1 overall) had no problem bouncing back from a 32-19 loss to Fort Bragg last week in Lakeport. Adams led the way, passing for 140 yards and four TDs and rushing for another score.
Adams also completed TD passes to Jake Jackson from 28 yards out and to Cameron Borg from 19 yards during a 20-point second quarter that pushed the Cardinals’ lead to 34-6 at halftime.
When Jackson scored on a 7-yard run midway through the quarter and Ruben Garcia kicked the extra point to make it 41-6, the game resumed with a running clock. Isaac Lewis’ 14-yard run late in the third quarter made it a 48-6 game.
“This is definitely a team on the rise and getting better every week,” Clear Lake coach Mark Cory said. “Honestly I thought they came out a little flat, but they picked it up in that second quarter. Big pass plays broke their backs.”
Adams struggled a bit in Clear Lake’s loss a week ago against Fort Bragg but came back strong against St. Vincent, according to Cory.
“He bounced back and played really well,” Cory said. “He’s a hell of a quarterback.”
Sam Long’s 69 yards rushing on nine carries led Clear Lake on the ground. St. Vincent is now 0-2 in league and 1-2 overall.
With the junior varsity Cardinals also winning handily, 40-0, it turned out to a perfect homecoming Friday for the home team.
