ROSEVILLE >> When the North State Modified Series returns to the All American Speedway in Roseville on Saturday for the second-to-last race of the 2016 season, precious points will be on the line for those atop the standings.
Defending champion and current points leader Darrin Knight of Kelseyville is holding an 87-point lead over runner-up Charlie Collins of Lakeport. Sitting just 11 points behind Collins in third place is Kelseyville’s Darrin Sullivan. Mike Collins of Lakeport is 14 points behind Sullivan in fourth place while Codi Barba of Cobb is in fifth place, 68 points in back of Mike Collins.
Other points leaders are Sierra Furia in Lakeport, currently sixth; Jason Philpot of Sacramento in seventh; Oregon’s Rich Cobb in eighth; Petaluma’s Richie Potts in ninth; and Bryan Denton of Kelseyville in 10th.
The Roseville race on Saturday is part of the Pacific Challenge Series for Late Models. Street stocks are also part of the racing card. A Friday practice session at 3 p.m. takes place before Saturday’s races.
NSMS action wraps up Oct. 1 with the Lloyd Burton Against the Wind Challenge at the Shasta Speedway in Anderson. Cars receive $300 to star and the winner earns $1,500.
Burton was a longtime supporter of auto racing in the Redding-Chico area and served as the head official at Shasta Speedway in the 1990s when the facility was promoted by Bob Carrel. He also was the founder of the Northern California Auto Racing Alumni (NCARA). Burton’s brother-in-law, Mort Houston, along with other family members, friends, NCARA, Strauss Promotions and NSMS have added $5,000 to the purse to make it a special event.
