LAKEPORT >> After risking life and limb to serve in the United States military, over 1.4 million veterans return at risk for homelessness.

This week, the local United Veteran’s Council of Lake County is partnering with Sutter Lakeside Hospital, other agencies, and the community to host the third annual Veteran’s Stand Down event to connect homeless veterans with available resources. The event will take place today and Thursday at the Lake County fairgrounds from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Poverty, lack of support services, lack of adequate housing, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) all contribute to higher rates of homelessness among veterans than the general population, according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. Targeted initiatives such as Stand Down events have contributed to lowering the rates of homelessness among veterans in recent years.

The Stand Down is sponsored by the United Veteran’s Council of Lake County and supported by the VA. Stand Down events typically last between one and three days, and offer supplies and services to homeless veterans including food, clothing, VA Social Security guidance, and referrals to resources such as housing solutions.

Volunteers and nurses from Sutter Lakeside Hospital will provide free health screenings to attendees, as well as sponsor food for participants. Over 30 agencies and organizations will provide additional services, including personal care kit backpacks, dental screenings, and mental health services for an anticipated turnout of 250 people.

“We encourage all veterans to participate in this event,” said Siri Nelson, chief administrative officer, Sutter Lakeside Hospital. “We strive to provide our community with the best care possible; however, it’s not always possible for our community to come to us. We’re excited for the opportunity to provide services for our veterans in a way that is convenient for them.”

“This is the third year Sutter Lakeside has participated in the Stand Down,” said Nelson. “This year, we’re focusing on expanding the scope healthcare services we can offer at the event.”
