UPPER LAKE >> The Upper Lake Cougars didn’t extend their two-game winning streak on Wednesday afternoon but they also didn’t start a losing streak against the visiting Tomales Braves in North Central League II girls’ soccer action.

Upper Lake and Tomales battled to a 0-0 draw. Both teams had 15 shots on goal but couldn’t find the net despite a handful of close calls. Julia Mooney’s direct kick midway through the second half nearly broke up the tie but the junior’s shot sailed just above the frame as players on both sides held their collective breath.

“I thought it went in,” Upper Lake coach Mandy Robbins said. “I was surprised. It was a nice shot by Julia.”

That wasn’t Upper Lake’s only scoring opportunity but it certainly was one of the few dramatic moments on offense in a game dominated by the two defenses.

“We had a couple of other great opportunities but their goalie did a nice job,” Robbins said.

As did Upper Lake keeper Jazlyn Bonilla, who recorded her fourth shutout of the season as the Cougars moved to 2-2-1 in league play and 3-4-1 overall.

“She had 13 saves and I think they’re goalie had around the same number,” Robbins said. “They both played great.”

Upper Lake struggled with its throw-ins on more than one occasion, according to Robbins.

“We gave it to them like eight times, way too many,” Robbins said. “But they still played really well.”

Upper Lake maintained its high level of play on the defensive end despite the loss of two starters because of injuries.

“We’re hoping to get them back but I don’t know if they are coming back,” Robbins said.

The Cougars return to action Friday in Rohnert Park when they play Technology at 4:30 p.m.
