CLOVERDDALE >> The Cloverdale Eagles are still looking for their first North Central League I win, but that didn’t stop them from putting up a pretty good fight on Thursday against the undefeated Kelseyville Knights in varsity volleyball action at Cloverdale.

Kelseyville won 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 to improve to 4-0 while Cloverdale slipped to 0-4.

“They picked up a lot of our stuff,” Kelseyville coach Donelle McCallister said of the Eagles. “They’ve got a freshman (Tehya Bird) who is pretty darn good.”

The first two sets were close the entire way, according to McCallister.

“They were pretty even all the way through. It was tough,” she said.

Carli Mendonca pounded out 11 kills on only 19 arms swings to lead the Knights at the net where freshman Allison Bryant also had eight kills. Veteran setter Riley Goff finished with 34 assists and had four aces. Lauren Rudnick led the Knights with 14 digs and Tymeka Green served up four aces.

Kelseyville’s victory keeps it even with Clear Lake (4-0) atop the league standings. St. Helena and Fort Bragg are tied for third place at 3-1.

Kelseyville also won the junior varsity match, beating Cloverdale 25-13, 25-14 behind six kills and two aces from Kalee Ellis and four kills and two aces from Grace Duty. Other team leaders were Paige Bour with four assists, two digs and two aces, Malia Brown with five assists and seven digs, and Paige Profitt with four digs.

Kelseyville travels to Fort Bragg on Tuesday. JV action begins at 5 p.m. The Knights’ next home match is Sept. 29 against Middletown.
