GEYSERVILLE >> Playing its best game of the season, the Upper Lake High School boys’ soccer team dropped a 3-1 North Central League II decision to Geyserville on Wednesday afternoon in Geyserville.
“It was a battle. We were in it the whole time,” Upper Lake coach Kevin O’Brien said. “It was a good, physical game from both teams.”
Geyserville led 2-0 at the half. Upper Lake (0-7) closed to 2-1 in the second half on an unassisted goal by Alverto Solano and it remained a one-goal game until the 80th minute when Geyserville scored again.
“He laced one from probably 35 yards out,” O’Brien said of Solano’s long goal. “He put his foot into it … it was a pretty goal.”
Upper Lake had a chance to get on the scoreboard with a penalty kick in the first half but couldn’t convert.
“We get one there and that could have changed the game,” O’Brien said. “We had some other chances but we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”
Upper Lake is home Friday to play Clear Lake in a non-league game at 3 p.m.

At Calistoga, down to their third-strong goalie because of a recent rash of injuries, the Upper Lake Cougars were shut out by the Calistoga Wildcats in NCL II action.
Mallory Henry, the Cougars’ only healthy keeper, had more than 20 saves in a game where the Wildcats had 33 shots on goal.
“She did a good job,” Upper Lake coach Mandy Robbins said.
Jazlyn Bonilla (concussion) and Cheyanne Obedoza (knee), Upper Lake’s starting and backup keepers, are out indefinitely, according to Robbins.
“The girls played very hard and didn’t give up,” Robbin said. “Calistoga had better footwork and they were fast.”
Laisha Altamirano’s play on defense and Stephanie Macias’ play on offense were highlights for the Cougars (2-4-1 league, 3-6-1 overall), according to Robbins.
“They stepped it up today that’s for sure,” Robbins said.
The Cougars are home Friday to play Roseland University Prep at 4:30 p.m.
