LAKEPORT >> Clear Lake coach Mark Cory said he knew going into Friday’s non-league game against the Berean Christian Eagles that his Cardinals were facing a difficult task. He was right.

Berean Christian, a private school in Walnut Creek, grabbed a 34-6 lead in the first half and went on beat Clear Lake 42-6 at Don Owens Stadium in Lakeport.

“They were as advertised,” Cory said of the Eagles. “Their defensive line was pretty tough for us to handle.”

Clear Lake (3-2) scored on quarterback Alex Adams’ 2-yard keeper in the second quarter to make it 20-6.

“My guys hung in there and battled,” Cory said. “On offense we did move the ball at times.”

Sam Long’s 101 yards rushing on 15 carries led the Cardinals, who ran for 273 yards overall.

Berean Christian star wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins was ejected late in the second quarter after picking up a pair of penalties.

“Their coach (James Hodgins, Isaiah’s father) wasn’t very happy about that,” Cory said.

The loss snapped Clear Lake’s two-game winning streak. The Cardinals are back at home next Friday to play Kelseyville (4-1) in the annual Bass Bowl game.

Clear Lake’s junior varsity squad beat the Eagles 33-6.
