CLOVERDALE >> Cal Fire declared the Sawmill Fire fully contained on Thursday, ending a five day standoff that briefly caused concern for Lake County residents.
In all the blaze scorched 1547 acres of wildland near Sonoma County’s border with Lake County. No residences were destroyed, though two firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling through rugged terrain.
When the fire erupted on Sunday morning, Sept. 25, it cast a large pall visible throughout the county. Flames whipped by wind gusts spread from the Geysers Road area near Highway 175, expanding to 1,500 acres by Sunday night.
Cal Fire drenched it from the air and over 1,000 firefighters clawed at the perimeter, stopping all forward progress by Monday morning.
The fire never entered Lake County.
On Friday a small team of 14 firefighters remained on the scene to guard against flare ups. The cause remains under investigation.
