LAKEPORT >> The Bass Bowl Trophy visited Lakeport on Friday night but it’s not staying there.
Dwayne Yiggins rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns and backfield mate Patrick Mick ran for one score and caught another as the Kelseyville Knights put their ownage stamp on the night’s proceedings with a 42-14 victory at Don Owens Stadium.
Kelseyville (3-1 league, 5-1 overall) has now won the Bass Bowl four times in a row and leads the all-time series with Clear Lake 5-2. The Knights remain in the thick of the North Central League I race with their win while Clear Lake drops to 2-2 in league play and 3-3 overall.
“My hat’s off to Kelseyville,” Clear Lake coach Mark Cory said. “They played a great game and took it to us.”
And the Knights did. They built a 22-0 halftime lead before the Cardinals fought back in the third quarter, getting as close as 28-14. Clear Lake had a chance to get even closer after recovering a Kelseyville fumble, but the Knights stopped the Cardinals on downs near midfield as Scott Sanchez sacked Clear Lake quarterback Alex Adams for a 10-yard loss on fourth down.
The Knights put the game away with touchdowns on back-to-back possession in the fourth quarter, Yiggins scoring on a 6-yard run and Mick on a 7-yard run.
Kelseyville quarterback Logan Barrick also figured prominently in the win by throwing for one score, that to Mick in the second quarter, and running for another, also in the second period.
Both of Clear Lake’s touchdowns were of the passing variety as Adams connected with Jake Jackson from 15 yards out and Austin Davis from 39 yards. Jackson’s catch was a ricochet shot that glanced off a teammate’s hands and landed in his.
“The kids played with a lot of heart and character and I couldn’t be any prouder of them,” Kelseyville coach Erick Larsen said of his second win in as many Bass Bowl appearances since taking over the program in 2015.
Larsen said he has plans for the Bass Bowl Trophy.
“I’m going to put it in the weight room as a reminder of one of the things we’re working toward during the season,” he said.
