MIDDLETOWN >> Victor Lopez scored in the seventh minute and that goal stood up as the Middletown Mustangs upset the Lower Lake Trojans 1-0 in North Central League I boys’ soccer action on Tuesday afternoon in Middletown.
“We had some good ball movement up the middle and a through ball through their defense,” Middletown coach Luis Chairez said. “Victor was able to beat them, he made a couple of moves and shot the ball over the head of their keeper.”
Einar Monroy assisted on what proved to be the game-winning shot.
Middletown’s defense made that single goal stand up although there were some close calls, according to Chairez.
“They (Trojans) hit one off the post with about five minutes to go in the first half,” he said. “They put a lot of pressure on us in the last five minutes of the first half and the last 10 minutes of the game.”
Middletown improves to 3-5-1 in league play while Lower Lake falls to 4-2-3.
“They’re a really good team,” Chairez said of the Trojans. “We played them smarter in the back than
when we played them at their place (Sept. 15 in Lower Lake, a 3-0 loss). It made a big difference.”
“We did some pretty good pressure on them, but I guess it was just our time to lose,” Lower Lake coach Javier Michel said.
