LAKEPORT >> A man who accepted cash to allow another to grow marijuana on his property was arrested by Lakeport Police on Friday, along with the site’s alleged caretaker.

Officers confiscated 46 mature plants and a loaded .40 caliber handgun at the location.

Steven Glen Sprague Jr., 38 of Lakeport, reportedly informed officers that he agreed to allow a person not yet identified by investigators to cultivate marijuana on land he owned in the 2400 block of Parallel Drive. According to LPD Chief Brad Rasmussen, Sprague said he received $6,000 before planting with the balance — $4,000 — to be paid upon completion of harvest.

An officer on patrol noticed the outdoor grow Friday afternoon and requested additional support. After speaking with Sprague, police searched the property and located a grow site and impromptu camp.

Moises Lazodavalos, 61 of Clearlake, appeared to be living at the camp. Investigators believe he was tending the plants and guarding the site. The weapon was found at the camp.

Officers took both men into custody. The plants, which weighed 1,140 pounds, were later destroyed.

Sprague and Lazodavalos face felony charges of conspiracy to cultivate marijuana for profit. Rasmussen indicated that law enforcement will seek an additional charge of being armed in the commission of a felony against Lazodavalos.
