Lakeport >> With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, Skin Fitness is again holding the “Kiss Cancer Goodbye” fundraiser for Miss Lake County Faith Hornby’s “Faith’s Fund.”
Hornby began her efforts reaching out to help cancer patients through her charitable fund as a 9-year-old girl. She was prompted to do so after attending a breast cancer awareness meeting with her mother. Hornby wanted to make patients feel better.
She first set out to make chemotherapy less difficult for patients and raised enough funds to purchase eight portable DVD units with headphones, movies and music to help make the time go by quicker and make them smile, mother Janice Hornby wrote in an email.
Faith Hornby then wanted to make them feel good about themselves and raised money for wigs and wig accessories. Usually there is a stock of 20 wigs at any given time for cancer patients to take for free, they can order a customized wig as well.
As Miss Lake County, Hornby put out a music CD and 100 percent of the funds will be split between donating to the 3-D mammogram machine at Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport and the other half to a local chemotherapy clinic for massage chairs.
Each October, the Kiss Cancer Goodbye fundraiser is held at Skin Fitness. With the donation of $1 per kiss, participants can pick out their choice of lip color and plant a kiss on the kissing board. They are secretly numbered, and at the end of the month three judges (which have included mayors, a police chief and sheriff) pick out their favorites and the winner will get a gift donated by the Lakeport business.
Anyone can participate, men and women, Tuesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Skin Fitness, located at 480 S. Main St. in Lakeport, or call 263-3400 if those times don’t work.
There are also informational resources and leaflets on home breast exams and breast cancer information. Wigs and wig accessories are available as well if anyone needs or knows someone in need.
