Measure V is a must

As you listen to TV and the calls for a no vote on Measure V in San Francisco, please keep in mind that Measure has no relationship to the Measure V in Clearlake. Measure V in the City of Clearlake is all about the resurrection of the roads and possibly of the City itself. Although this measure promises to become only the beginning of much needed road repair and maintenance, it will be a beginning that has been sought but turned down by tax-payers several times in the past.

According to the pamphlet produced by the City, there are 112 miles of roads almost half of which are not paved. The $1.6 Million generated each year from a small raise in sales taxes will generate only enough money to keep the dirt roads graded and repair and maintain the paved ones.

It is anticipated that once the residents show willingness to tax themselves for improvements, State and Federal monies will become more available. Previous attempts to raise taxes have met with failure because the money was not specifically designated for streets and roads. Measure V is a Special Tax and CANNOT be spent for other than road maintenance and improvements.

More information can be found on-line at www.clearlake.ca.us

A national transportation research group, TRIP, has determined that bad roads can cost vehicle owners an additional $800 a year based on tire wear, fuel usage, car life and maintenance. In addition, taxpayers pay for wear and tear on emergency vehicles for police and fire departments, some hospitals, and school transportation. It makes good economic sense to spread these expenses out to those who use the roads whether they are residents or tourists.

A yes vote on Measure V will show that you care about the future of your City.

Yes to Measure Z

The Lakeport Employees Association is pleased to join several Community Groups and Concerned Citizens in support of Measure Z.

Lakeport is the center of our community, with services, businesses and recreation opportunities that draw 30,000 people every day. Measure Z will provide locally- controlled funds to help address local community priorities, such as:

■ Paving and repairing streets and roads

■ Maintaining police responses to violent crimes

• Maintaining police responses to property crimes, such as burglaries

■ Attracting and retaining quality police officers

■ Retaining existing companies and businesses in the City

There are several economic challenges facing small communities across the state. Measure Z will ensure that vital services will not be lost or severely cut in Lakeport.

Rosenthal for supervisor

When a woman as knowledgeable, resourceful and experienced as Monica Rosenthal offers to serve as our Supervisor, we should not hesitate to take her up on it.

Monica has already established working relationships with officials in county, state and federal offices who can be instrumental in helping our supervisors reach our goals. As a former member of the Lake County Planning Commission, and in decision-making positions in a number of the most influential organizations in Lake County, she has learned how to consolidate the varied needs of a broad range of constituents.

She will take office ready and able to perform as needed.

I urge you to join me in voting for Monica Rosenthal for Supervisor District 1.
