UPPER LAKE >> pper Lake’s starters took care of business in the first set and the Cougars used a mix of starters and reserves the rest of the way while beating Tomales 25-12, 25-23, 25-21 in North Central League II varsity volleyball action on Thursday evening in Upper Lake.
The Cougars are 9-3 in the league standings and tied with Rincon Valley Christian for second place.
Christina Wilson and Isabel Rorabaugh led Upper Lake with eight kills apiece and Kejhana Taylor added six more. Natalie Karlsson finished with four kills, 19 assists and seven aces.
The Cougars finish up their league schedule next week with a home game Tuesday against Sonoma Academy and a road game Thursday at Rincon Valley Christian.

Clear Lake def. Lower Lake
At Lower Lake, Clear Lake setter Kylie Udy served the first 12 points of the third set as the Cardinals improved to 11-1 in the NCL I standings with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-7 victory over the Lower Lake Trojans.
Udy also finished with six aces. Madi Ferguson added 13 service points with eight aces.
Also for the Cardinals, Kiana Richardson led the way with 10 kills, Camille Donald added nine, Corin Alakszay had five and Valerie Hutton four.
Clear Lake hosts St. Helena (9-3) on Tuesday and plays at Kelseyville (12-0) on Thursday to close out its league schedule.
Lower Lake is 2-10 in league play.
Clear Lake won the junior varsity match 18-25, 25-11, 15-9 behind 13 service points, eight aces and four kills from Lilli Hill.
Girls’ soccer
Clear Lake 5, Lower Lake 0
At Lakeport, Amelia Perry scored twice and Carina Martinez, Regina Faalelea and Tianna Jardstrom added goals, all in the first half, as the Clear Lake Cardinals shut out the Lower Lake Trojans.
The win keeps Clear Lake (9-1-2) a half-game behind Middletown (9-0-3) in the NCL I standings with two games left for each team. Clear Lake travels to St. Helena (8-2-2) on Tuesday while Middletown visits Kelseyville (5-3-4).
Clear Lake coach Tommy Burke said the Cardinals have been preparing to play on St. Helena’s fast artificial turf.
“The last two weeks we’ve been gearing up toward playing on the turf,” he said.
K’ville 4, Fort Bragg 2
At Fort Bragg, Kat Brown scored three more goals — she has seven in the last two games — as the Kelseyville Knights beat the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in NCL I play. “We didn’t play our best game but we still managed to win,” Kelseyville coach Eric Hoefler said. “Today was a gut-check day. It was an overall team effort.”
Christina Covarrubias had the other goal for Kelseyville (5-3-4).
Kelseyville hosts league-leading Middletown (9-0-3) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Boys’ soccer
M’town 1, St. Helena 1 (tie)
At Middletown, Ricardo Chaires scored with an assist from Victor Lopez late in the first half to tie the game for Middletown and the host Mustangs and St. Helena Saints ended up deadlocked at 1.
“I thought we had possession of the ball for the most part in the second half and we had a few runs but just missed the shots,” Middletown coach Luis Chairez said.
Chaires and Lopez anchored the offense while Saul Padilla stood out on defense for the Mustangs (3-7-2), according to Chairez.
Middletown plays at league-leading Kelseyville (9-0-3) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Clear Lake 3, Lower Lake 3 (tie)
At Lakeport, Kevin Chavez scored with six minutes remaining to give Clear Lake a 3-3 tie with Lower Lake in NCL I action. The draw snapped a 10-game Clear Lake (0-10-2) losing streak in league play.
Alex Beare and Gio Sanchez also scored for the Cardinals, who led 1-0 after the first half.
“It was a competitive game, a great game,” Clear Lake coach Tony Paskaly said.
Standouts on defense for Clear Lake were Nick Holmes and Bron Falkenberg, according to Paskaly.
Leonardo Orozco scored twice for Lower Lake (5-2-5) and Carlos Martinez had the Trojans’ other goal.
